06/24/2011 - Final Atari 7800 Expansion Module Box RevealedFinal
Atari 7800 Expansion Module Box Revealed!
While following a lead on the Atari Flashback 3 one of our intrepid writers was able to steal a cam phone pic of the completed Atari 7800 Expansion Module. The is the final,
ready to ship product, with its completed packaging.
The packaging has the same look and feel
of the original Atari 7800 box from 1984. (And not the later and more common 1986 box.) This interesting design choice creates
a visual continuity with the classic Atari brand. It also has a look that builds upon the vision of the original Atari designers.
In my opinion, this product looks like it just rolled off the Atari assmebly line.
The packaging appears to be a glossy sleeve that slides over a standard but sturdy box. This gives the completed
product a high quality, professional look, while keeping costs relatively low. (which is probably a good thing as this
project is rumored to have cost over $10,000 US.)
The highly
anticpated Atari 7800 Expansion Module (XM) brings new features and functions to your classic 7800 console. The XM adds high
score support, expanded audio features, and additional RAM for creating larger games with more colors and enhanced graphics.
The XM also features two expansion ports, a SIO Port
and a 15 Pin expansion port. These two ports will eventually be used with keyboards, storage devices, and other possible hardware
add-ons.
The 7800 Expansion module is already compatible
with over 25 different games, including 10 games from the classic 7800 library. The device also has support for many popular
7800 home brew titles. There are also many brand new games already in production, many created for use exclusively
with 7800 XM.
Ironically the creator of the 7800 XM was
also involved in the development of the Atari Flashback series. Strangely enough we went in search of the truth behind one
product, the Atari Flashback 3, and wound up getting a bigger scoop on another product. Its funny how these things work
out.
We hope to have a full review of the 7800 XM as soon as the product arrives here at the office. Please stay
tuned for more details.
