Scientists: Head Shots Improve Decision Making

Combat Arms-style games help players make quick, accurate decisions, scientists say

According to researchers at the University of Rochester (N.Y.), action gamers, specifically players who play first-person-shooters (FPS), like the free-to-play online FPS Combat Arms, are able to make quicker, more accurate decisions compared to non-gamers.

The results of the researchers from the University of Rochester were published in the Sept. 14 issue of Current Biology. The scientists say that FPS players’ improved decision making comes from the unpredictable nature of their gaming experiences. These improved skills can be transferred to tasks outside of the game.

To help continue improving players decision making skills this week, Nexon America is adding more weapons to Combat Arms’ industry-leading arsenal, as well as a new mode, “Seize and Secure,” the twelfth game mode available in the game.

“We see Combat Arms as a community service,” said Davy Garaix, Nexon America’s producer of Combat Arms. “We’ve helped millions of people improve their decision making through action-packed armed battles. Using our patented near-critical ‘nut shot,’ no telling how many accidents this has prevented or how much we have made lives better. We have so many ways for players to raise their decision making skills, that perhaps in real life, Combat Arms players could be considered almost super heroes.”

The additions coming this week to Combat Arms include the TPG-1 sniper rifle set, which should help people improve their visual judgment; a new survival machete, which will help improve physical reactions; and a rare assault rifle, the M14EBR, which will improve player’s ability to shoot their enemies in the head during game matches.

The goal of the new “Seize and Secure” mode, aside from helping improve players think quicker, is to activate the flag trigger of a flagpole to raise a team’s flag to the top. To win this mode, players must keep their team’s flag raised on the flagpole for two consecutive minutes, or, in a tiebreaker case, have the most points.

Combat Arms will also continue to implement head up display improvements as well as add the ability for players to gift gear point (GP) items to each other.

TwinGalaxies.com (Press Release) – Sep 20, 2010 – Official video game scorekeeping organization Twin Galaxies has announced that the World Record on the classic arcade game Donkey Kong has changed hands for the third time this year as former champion Steve Wiebe climbs back into the top spot with a score of 1,064,500 points.

Wiebe last held the Donkey Kong record in spring of 2007, only to be bested by his movie rival Billy Mitchell months later.  Mitchell's score fell to New York's Hank Chien in March of this year, but the Florida hot sauce distributor regained the title on July 31 with a score of 1,062,800 points.

Wiebe, who has attempted regaining the record at numerous live events over the years, recorded his championship game on August 30 for submission to Twin Galaxies, who verified and announced the score on Monday, September 20 as the new World Record.

About Twin Galaxies International

Founded in Ottumwa by Walter Day in 1981, Twin Galaxies is the world's official authority on player rankings, gaming statistics and championship tournaments and now runs from its Twin Galaxies International corporate offices in Manchester, New Hampshire.

RUMOR: Nintendo 3DS Launching November 21st, 2010

Rumors are flying all over the web claiming the Nintendo 3DS will launch this November. Is there any truth to these rumors? And what's driving these stories? Let's address the facts and see where all these rumors began.

Japanese Peripheral Developer Leaks 3DS Launch Date on Twitter

Newswire/3DS_tweet.jpg

A former employee of Japanese company Keys Factory recently posted this item on his Twitter page. He says that his company will have several accessories to go along with the Nintendo 3DS launch, which according to the employee, is coming November 20th. Soon after this "tweet" was posted the comment and the entire account disappeared. Did someone realize their mistake? Or did the "Nintendo Ninjas" suspend the account?

Paper Mario 3DS Coming In 2010

Sometime after the infamous Twitter leak another story hit the web. This time a Japanese newspaper called Asahi Shimbun Nippon published a story claiming Paper Mario 3DS was set for release in 2010. Here's a scan from the issue.

Newswire/Paper_Mario_3DS_2010.jpg

GameStop Computers List 3DS Release Date: Myth Busted?

Finally the latest bit of controversy comes from a little known Nintendo 3DS blog. The blog in question claimed GameStop has listed the shipping date for the 3DS as November 22nd. The 22nd is a Monday. Nintendo usually releases their big games and hardware on a Sunday. This ship date would make sense considering the Postal Service is closed on Sunday. The ship date would probably be for online customers only. This means if the leak is true, the release date would probably be Sunday, November 21st.

Unfortunately after calling several GameStop stores from NY to Hawaii we found that none of the stores we contacted had the system in their computers. So is this rumor untrue? Well, not necessarily. Some stores have created a contact list for people who want to be informed the second the 3DS is available for pre-order. Also, and much more importantly, Nintendo has a very good reason to launch the 3DS this holiday season.

Launching the 3DS to Counter the Xbox Kinect and Sony Move

Nintendo's rivals have brought their own motion control gaming devices to the market. Releasing the 3DS now could utterly destroy the holiday market for both products. Consumers only have so many gaming dollars to spend at the holiday season. If the 3DS does release in November its sure to be the hottest item this Holiday Season. This would steal all the focus from Microsoft and Sony's new products, and more importantly, it would steal the gaming dollars of potential consumers. This is a very agressive tactic for Nintendo, but if its true, it would certainly knock both MS and Sony out of the spotlight and out of the race.

Considering Nintendo's Past History

Nintendo has a history of releasing products in November. And also releasing their products on a Sunday. The Wii was released on November 19th, 2006. The original Nintendo DS was released in Japan on November 21st. (Coincidentally the same date as the rumored 3DS release date.) Could Nintendo's past history give us a clue to their future actions?

Anecdotal Evidence from E3

Personally I can say that when I was at E3 I thought the case design for the 3DS looked awfully close to the final product. Plastic manufacturing is a very costly process. The 3DS looked polished and ready to go. And there were tons of units on the show floor. Also a few games seemed very close to being finished. This includes Kid Icarus, which is probably a launch title.

September 29th: Truth Revealed?

Nintendo is holding a press event on September 29th. Could this be when we finally learn the truth about the Nintendo 3DS launch date? Stay tuned and find out!

Take A Ride On The Wild Side With Joe’s Adventures - All-New Story-Based DLC For Mafia® II Starring Joe Barbaro
Thursday 16th September/... 2K Games announced today that Joe’s Adventures*, the third action-packed downloadable game add-on for the epic crime game, Mafia® II, is coming worldwide to the PlayStation®Store for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC later this year. Joe’s Adventures continues the prodigious crime drama of Mafia II through the eyes of Joe Barbaro, Vito Scaletta’s best friend, during the time that Vito spends in prison. The game add-on extends the original narrative of Mafia II by combining a dramatic storyline with intense arcade-style gameplay that opens up several new areas in Empire Bay and items for players to get their hands dirty with.

Impulsive and unpredictable, Joe Barbaro has been at Vito’s side since childhood. That is, until Vito gets caught and sent to prison. In Joe’s Adventures, Joe uncovers the truth behind Vito’s prison sentence and what’s really going on in the Clemente family.

Joe’s Adventures offers an engaging narrative and allows players to explore new locations, including a train station, the cathouse, a boat yard, a seasonally changing lakefront and some never-before-seen buildings in Empire Bay. This exciting new chapter in the Mafia II saga includes new clothing, collectibles and even more classic 40’s and 50’s music. In addition to the story-based missions, Joe’s Adventures opens up a slew of optional city-based quests packed with arcade action gameplay and a points-based system that allows players to move up the ranks on the online leaderboard through combos and multiplier bonuses. Stan Lee Wants You! Famed Comic Book Legend Asks You To Join The Video Game Voters Network

Newswire/stan-lee-photo.jpg

This special message from Stan Lee is being sent out by the Video Game Voters Network.

"I'm writing to urge gamers everywhere to take a stand and defend both the First Amendment and the rights of computer and video game artists by joining the Video Game Voters Network (VGVN). My memory has always been lousy and it's not improving with age. But it's good enough to remember a time when the government was trying to do to comic books what some politicians now want to do with video games: censor them and prohibit their sales. It was a bad idea half a century ago and it's just as bad an idea now. And you can do something about it.

I created Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Hulk, the virtual ancestors of the characters in today's games. In the 1950s, there was a national hysteria about the so-called "dangerous effect" comic books were having on our nation's youth.

Comic books, it was said, contributed to "juvenile delinquency." A Senate subcommittee investigated and decided the U.S. could not "afford the calculated risk involved in feeding its children, through comic books, a concentrated diet of crime, horror and violence." Comic books were burned. The State of Washington made it a crime to sell comic books without a license. And Los Angeles passed a law that said it was a crime to sell "crime comic books." Looking back, the outcry was -- forgive the expression -- comical.

The more things change, as they say, the more they stay the same. Substitute video games for comic books and you've got a 21st century replay of the craziness of the 1950s. States have passed laws restricting the sale of video games and later this year, the Supreme Court will hear a case about one of those laws, this one passed in California. Why does this matter? Because if you restrict sales of video games, you're chipping away at our First Amendment rights to free speech and opening the door to restrictions on books and movies.

The Supreme Court should find the law unconstitutional, as lower courts have. But politicians will keep looking for ways to restrict the rights of gamers and computer and video game artists because it makes for good headlines to say they're "protecting the children," even if they're doing no such thing. They do so despite the fact that the industry has a remarkable rating system in place already and all new consoles have parental controls -- both of which help parents ensure parents are in control of what their children play. But you can help fight the battle against politicians.

The VGVN was created so gamers can express their views and tell our political leaders that it's as ridiculous to worry about video games today as it was to worry about comic books then. Far from being dangerous, video games are increasingly powerful contributors to our nation's entertainment, economy, education, and society.

By joining the VGVN, you'll be telling our political leaders that you care enough about the games you play to use your voice and your vote to help those who recognize the realities and benefits of gaming and punish those who try to restrict both your access to games and your rights. Please join and participate. It'll be good for your constitution."

Happy Birthday Super Mario Bros!!
Classic Video Game Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Newswire/super_mario_choccake.jpg

25 years ago today Super Mario Bros was released and video game history was changed forever. The massive success of this game would make its star, an Italian Plumber named Mario, into a video game legend. It would also help Nintendo secure a position as the World's most powerful video game publisher. Super Mario Bros would reign as the highest selling video game in the world for over 20 years. It would only be dethroned by another famous Nintendo game, the insanely popular Wii Sports.

Mario first made his debut in the game Donkey Kong, although in that game he was called "Jump Man." Later, Mario and his Brother Luigi would star in another video game simply called "Mario Bros." Why not include Luigi in the title? Well strangely enough, Mario's last name is "mario." So his full name is actually "Mario Mario" and his brother is "Luigi Mario."

Newswire/super-mario-bros-box-art.jpg

The success of Mario Bros would set the stage for the release of Super Mario Bros. Created by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, the title would feature classic 2D platform gameplay that would establish the standard for the genre even to this day. The world of Super Mario Bros was bright and sunny. It was filled with joyful music and dreamlike scenery involving castles, killer turtles, giant pipes and enourmous mushroom platforms. Its creativity, imagination and pure brilliance were unlike any other game of the day.

Since that day, Mario and his brother Luigi have become video legends starring in literally dozens of million selling titles. Mario himself is so iconic he has been called "The Mickey Mouse of Video Games."

We here at DigThatBox.com would like to congratulate Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto and Mario & Luigi on reaching this amazing milestone. We would also like to thank Mr Miyamoto for bringing us one of the greatest titles in video game history.

If you've never played Super Mario Bros, or if you just want to re-live the nostaligia, follow the link below to play a version of SMB on your PC Browser.

The Wait Is Almost Over for 2010’s Biggest Entertainment Event: the Debut of “Halo: Reach”
Millions of fans worldwide will usher in the launch of the highly anticipated Xbox 360 exclusive game tonight
LONDON – 13 September 2010 – The most anticipated entertainment event of the year is almost here. Starting at midnight tonight, millions of people around the world will embark on a mission of courage, sacrifice and valour in “Halo: Reach,” the thrilling prequel to the iconic “Halo” trilogy that became a global entertainment phenomenon and defined a generation of gamers over the last decade.

Not since the debut of “Star Wars: Episode I” have fans been so excited to revisit a beloved franchise. Recently dubbed “a pop culture phenomenon” by Variety magazine and hailed as the No. 1 game series of all time1, the “Halo” franchise will once again make history with the launch of “Halo: Reach,” which goes on sale at 12:01 am tonight in more than 25 countries.

“When it comes to the size and scope of a franchise and especially the dedication of the fans, no game is bigger than ‘Halo,’” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios at Microsoft Corp. “With ‘Halo: Reach,’ we’re delivering on our promise to redefine blockbuster entertainment experiences and ultimately help make this year the biggest ever in Xbox history.”

To celebrate the launch, tens of thousands of retailers around the world are opening their doors at midnight exclusively to sell copies of “Halo: Reach,” as well as “Halo: Reach” Xbox 360 consoles and accessories. Special midnight openings are taking place in major cities around the world, including London, further adding to the fervour surrounding the highly anticipated video game, which is expected to top all previous entertainment launches this year.

“Halo: Reach” tells the tragic and heroic story of Noble Team, a group of Spartans, who through great sacrifice and courage, saved countless lives in the face of impossible odds. The planet Reach is humanity’s last line of defence between the encroaching Covenant and their ultimate goal, the destruction of Earth. If it falls, humanity will be perched on the brink of destruction.

Published by Microsoft Game Studios, the “Halo” franchise of games is exclusive to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the Xbox LIVE online entertainment network. As evidence of the game’s highly anticipated release, more than 2.7 million players participated in the “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta in May, making it the largest console video game beta test on record and more than triple the size of the historic “Halo 3” beta.

The “Halo” franchise is an award-winning collection of properties that has grown into a global entertainment phenomenon. Beginning with the original “Halo: Combat Evolved” (2001), the critically acclaimed and record-shattering series of games has since inspired multiple New York Times best-selling novels, comic books, action figures, apparel and more. To date, more than 34 million copies of “Halo” games have been sold worldwide, driving more than 3.3 billion hours of gameplay by people connected to Xbox LIVE.

Regional Launch Events and “Halo: Reach” Midnight Madness

Put on your sunglasses and prepare to step into the boots of Duke Nukem, whose legend has reached epic proportions in the years since his last adventure. The alien hordes are back and only Duke can save the world, again. Pig cops, alien shrink rays and enormous alien bosses won’t stop our hero from accomplishing his one and only goal: to save the world, save the babes and to be a bad-ass while doing it. The King of All Shooters is back with over-the-top weapons, massive aliens and unprecedented levels of interactivity. This game puts pedal to the metal and tongue firmly in cheek, among other places. Shoot hoops, lift weights, read adult magazines, draw crude messages on whiteboards or ogle one of the many beautiful women that populate Duke’s life; that is if you can pull yourself away long enough from kicking ass and taking names. Duke Nukem was and will forever be immortalized in gaming history, and this is his legend.

“Hail to the king, baby! It's unbelievable, it kicks ass and it's totally going to happen!” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, "Gearbox has enabled die-hard key Duke Nukem franchise builders and skilled veteran game makers to stand together and deliver. All gamers deserve a happy ending and after all of us gamers feeling the full range of emotions about Duke Nukem Forever, I am thrilled to be in a position with the trust, power and means to make it happen. Am I crazy? Balls of steel, baby, balls of steel!”

Duke Nukem Forever is currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 system and Windows PC and is not yet rated by PEGI. 2K Games has the exclusive, long-term publishing rights to the game. To catch your first glimpse of the Duke Nukem Forever experience please visit

Power Gig: Rise of the SixString will be the true evolution of the band videogame experience when it arrives this fall with a genuine six string guitar as wireless controller. The guitar features Seven45’s proprietary technology that can distinguish and recognize gamers’ input all along the guitar, making the guitars as easy to pick up and play as any other band game button controllers. The unique dual-functionality of the SixString allows for use in-game as well as with any standard guitar amplifier. In addition to traditional beat-matching that will be familiar to fans of the band game genre, Power Gig also introduces the option to switch on chording, which presents the added challenge of playing the game using chords that require specific finger placement on the neck. As players progress through the game, becoming more comfortable with a genuine guitar and challenging themselves to play real power chords, they will find the byproduct of playing the game is coming away from it with real-life guitar skills.

PlayStation®3 Do be a Stranger – Oddworld returns!

OTLEY, WEST YORKSHIRE, UK – 3rd September, 2010 – Just Add Water (JAW) is thrilled to announce the return of the critically-acclaimed Oddworld series - with an enhanced remake of the award-winning Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath coming to PlayStation®3 next Easter.

Originally released in 2005, first- and third-person action-adventure Stranger’s Wrath marks the multi-million-selling series’ first appearance on a PlayStation® console since 1998’s Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. The game will be made available as a digital download via PlayStation® Network.

Stewart Gilray, Managing Director of JAW, said: “Since word got out that we’ve been working with Oddworld Inhabitants there have been many rumours circulating about what we’re working on. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is the first project in what we believe will be a long and fruitful relationship. Having the chance to update this great title and release it on PS3 is just a brilliant opportunity, not least for us, but for the fans too.”
