On a warm Saturday morning, I ventured to one of my favorite conventions
of the year, Power-Con. This is the big event for fans of the Masters of the Universe (MOTU) franchise.
The real treat of this show is that since it is specific to one main focus, it yields a smaller but more more intimate show.
Everyone is here for the same thing; our shared love of all things MOTU.
The first thing I did when I got to the convention was hit
the show floor. The showroom floor was a dream come true for any MOTU fan. Everything from the newest toys
to original vintage figures and playsets were available. There were also unique and rare items like original artwork
from the classic Filmation cartoon as well as concept artwork by William Stout were available. If you were looking for old
MOTU lunch boxes or Skeletor erasers, or any rare collectible, you'd find them here. Want to purchase some vintage bootleg
figures from south of the border, you've come to the right place. I'm telling you, any MOTU fan would do wise to bring a wad
of cash ready to spend at this show.
Special Guests:
The guest list this year was incredibly robust, bringing out
some of the biggest names in the MOTU saga. Actors, artists, and toy industry veterans were among the many names that filled
the roster of over 40 different guests. It truly was an amazing turn out of notable personalities. Of particular interest
to me were several guests from the classic Masters of the Universe live action movie.
I'm sure many of you have seen the 1987 film, Masters of the
Universe. It has become an enduring cult classic beloved by millions. Fans of this great movie got the chance to
watch the film along with a live commentary from director Gary Goddard, actress Meg Foster (Evil-Lyn), actress Chelsea Field
(Teela) and actor Anthony De Longis (Blade) as well as production designer William Stout. It truly was amazing to hear all
their great stories. Everything from casting to designs and weapons training. Working with each other and the rushed conditions.
Despite the fact that there was a lot of difficulty in making this film, it still felt like the experience was something that is
cherished by everyone involved the production. It was a truly labor of love, especially for director Gary Goddard.
I'll share just a few highlights from this amazing presentation.
Anthony De Longis (Blade) said that many of the fight sequences were done in one or two takes because the weaponry was
real. Talk about having a commitment to realism. When asked why Orko and Battle Cat weren't in the movie, director Goddard
joked that they stayed on Eternia. However, the real truth was that there was no convincing way to portray them, particularly
Orko. He would have needed a little person in costume in a wire rig to simulate Orko's constant floating. Thus, we get Gwildor
instead of Orko. Finally, everyone in the cast mentioned how much they enjoyed working with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella.
They remained consummate professionals despite the tough working conditions.
Special Screenings:
Of course the MOTU movie screening wasn't the only special event
planned for the show. Fans were treated to several other special screenings, some of which made their debut at the show. Artist
James Eatock showed off completed scenes from his upcoming Filmation Style MOTU Episode titled "The Return of Faker."
This will be the first full length, classic style He-Man cartoon in over 3 decades!
Production company Definitive Films
held a showing of their new documentary called Power of Grayskull. It tells the definitive history of the MOTU universe. The long
awaited film made its debut at the show to rave reviews. It's a fantastically well crafted production detailing the history
and origins of the MOTU toy line. You can learn more about this film on the official website. (Link)
Last, but certainly not least, was a little production that wound up being one of my favorite parts of the show.
It was a documentary called Playtime Masters: Our Memories of He-Man and the Most Powerful Toys in the Universe. It was
a heartwarming story told by a group of dedicated fans who shared their intimate personal memories of growing up with MOTU.
You can watch a trailer for this great little film HERE.
Exclusive Merchandise:
This was easily the biggest and the best year for exclusive Power-Con
merchandise. Super 7, who now holds the license to the Master of the Universe Classics line, brought out two amazing action
figure three packs. As you can expect they sold out immediately. The company also continued their tradition of offering M.U.S.C.L.E.
style He-Man figures in a neat exclusive collectible trash can.
Super7 also had new versions of their trademark soft
vinyl figures from Japan. This included micro versions of both He-Man and Skeletor, along with 5 inch scale figures of Beastman,
in forest green and a nifty "purple reign" Skeletor figure. The company also had the latest wave of their extremely
popular ReAction style MOTU figures. And last, but certainly not least, MOTU M.U.S.C.L.E Series 3 made their debut at
the show.
Big News from Super 7:
Another highlight of the show was the Super7 panel.
The Bay Area toy company continues to knock it out of the park, after finally having delivered the first wave in their
new MOTU Ultimate Editions line. The sculpts that have been created are gorgeous. Not to be outdone though, they are
continuing with their ReAction and MUSCLE lines of MOTU figures. The panel started as a look back at the history of the company.
The big news coming out of the panel was the debut of a line of MOTU figures in the original 5 1/2” line. Some early
prototypes were on display in their booth as well. The other news was that they are working on a replica of the Snake Mountain
playset, however it is a slow going process as they are trying to tool it so that it's functional without costing a small
fortune.
Brand New Products:
Of course Super7 wasn't the only company on the show floor with
new merchandise. Each year Power-Con grows in both popularity and prestige, and that brings with it a host of new companies
looking to show off their great new products at the convention. Here are just some of the amazing new products I
found while touring the exhibit hall. Some of this stuff was exclusive to the show, others were limited run products, while
some were just making their debut at Power-Con.
The folks from Man or Monster Studios had an extremely limited
run of their amazing new Warlord of Wor 3 inch figure gift set. The pack included the three figures you see above, which are the
Gol Warrior, Bog-Nar Classic, and Nekroid Nightstalker. The gift pack also included a cool Bog-Nar enamel pin and
a 5 issue mini comic series! This was easily one of my favorite items at the show. The entire line is compatible with the
popular Savage Realm of Battle Tribes figure line. Click the links to learn more about Warlords of Wor (Link) and the Battle Tribes toy lines (Link).
dThe folks at Zolo World outdid themselves once again by bringing
several new toys from their Galaxxor and Realm of the Underworld toy lines. The figure you see above is their incredible Galaxxor
Cyborg Space Barbarian. This deluxe 5 1/2 inch figure is presented in stunning translucent red plastic and it features a giant
glow in the dark sword. The company also had exclusive figures from their extremely popular Realm of the Underworld series.
This included a couple of figures that would be shared exclusives with the New York Comic Con. Zolo World is doing great things
with their many products and I can't wait to see what they have in store for the future.
The legendary Four Horseman, a group of artists well known for
their incredible figure sculpts, showed off their new Power Lords figure line. The company has secured the rights to the cult
classic toy line and brought it back for a new generation. The result is an amazingly detailed, beautifully sculpted action
figure line that's sure to be a big hit with collectors.
Original Artwork:
Checking out
original artwork is always one of my favorite parts of any convention. A few pieces really stood for me. The first was Lamont
Hunt's kid Merman. It was just adorable. Be sure to check out his website for more fantastic stuff.

Next up was artist Richard Garcia's He-Man / Rat Fink crossover. It was a brilliant and
unexpected combination of two classic iconic characters. You can see more of his work on his official Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/RichardGarciaArt
Finally the folks that brought us the Warlords of Wor toy
line created these amazing resin cast figures just for the show. Dubbed "Galaxy Masters" the figures are a mash
up of Star Wars and Masters of the Universe. They were certainly one of the more unusual and creative items I saw at the show.
Also one of the most popular. They really drew a crowd.
Cosplay:
I know that I've said this before but I truly love cosplay. I
have tremendous respect for people who put their time, effort and dedication into making such great costumes. Cosplay makes
any convention more fun. It also brings a level of fun and whimsy that makes the show more special for everyone. These dedicated
folks were among a number of people who came to the show in costume. They graciously posed for photos with fans and their
children. The chance to pose with these live action heroes was one of the best souvenirs you could get at the show.
In Conclusion:
To the folks at Power-Con, all I can say is that you've outdone
yourselves. This was easily the best year ever for the increasingly popular show. There was so much to do and see that I could
hardly take it all in. You kept a smile on my face the whole weekend. Power-Con isn't just a great convention, it's also a
chance to mingle with a fantastic community of people. This convention just gets better with each passing year. I'm already
looking forward to Power-Con 2018! Special thanks to everyone who posed for my camera. Very special thanks to the folks at
Power-Con for allowing me to cover this great event. See you next year!
